German national team lucky in the World Cup playoffs

The German national handball team has been assigned a feasible task in qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. The team of national coach Alfred Gislason meets Belarus or the Faroe Islands in the playoff games (April 13th to 17th). This resulted in the draw on Saturday in Budapest. The nine winners of the knockout duels, determined by a two-leg game, will take part in the tournament in Poland and Sweden (January 12-29).

“Belarus are very strong opponents who we know well, of course – that’s mutual,” said Gislason. “Belarus have to beat the Faroe Islands first, and they’re anything but easy to classify.”

But another duel with Belarus is likely. Recent comparison with the WM-17. the German team recently won the preliminary round of the European Championship with 33:29. “We only found out how strong Belarus is in the opening game of the Euro. In order to continue on our way, qualifying for the World Cup is definitely our next goal,” said DHB sports director Axel Kromer.
