German fencers at the end of the World Cup without a further medal

The German fencers missed another medal at the end of the World Championships in Cairo.

The team of saber fencers around Larissa Eifler, Julika Funke, Elisabeth Gette and Lea Krüger lost in the quarterfinals with 42:45 against Spain, despite a strong fight back in the meantime. In the round of 16, the team surprisingly defeated the second seeded South Koreans 45:26, raising hopes for a medal.

The foil men around Alexander Kahl, Andre Sanita, Fabian Braun and Laurenz Rieger were eliminated in the last sixteen with a 38:45 against Canada. After two more losses in the placement round, the newly formed team finished the title fights in 15th place.

The German Fechter-Bund (DFeB) thus closes the World Championships with a medal, at the last World Championships in 2019 due to the corona break, Germany went away empty-handed. Epee fencer Alexandra Ndolo surprisingly won silver on Monday, achieving the best result by a German woman since 2014. Most recently, Britta Heidemann had also won silver.
