German cycling icon dies

German cycling mourns the loss of former road bike champion Dieter Flögel. The Bamberger died on Wednesday at the age of 68 as a result of heart disease.

This was announced by the Bund Deutscher Fahrrad (BDR) on Thursday.

Flögel celebrated his greatest success in Reute in 1983 when he won the German road cycling championships.

Flögel was also successful with classics such as Around Frankfurt (1977) and Around Essen (1976). At the Road World Championships in Prague in 1981, he finished fifth.

In 1984 he ended his career.
