It is still unclear whether Sebastian Vettel will also drive in Formula 1 in the coming season. One thing is certain: Aston Martin would like to keep the former world champion.
“For us, a contract extension with Sebastian is clearly Plan A,” revealed team boss Mike Krack in an interview with “Sport Bild”: “If he wants to, he will also drive at Aston Martin in 2023.”
Concrete talks have not yet been held between Vettel and the British racing team. Aston Martin currently has “so many other problems to solve,” explained Krack.
“The priority is clear at the moment: we have to improve the car, because it’s no use having contract talks based on hope. We have to create facts and then we’ll talk,” Vettel’s boss explained the plans.
When asked if Mick Schumacher was the team’s plan B, Krack replied: “Right now we only have a plan A, no plan B.” Means: Vettel should continue at Aston Martin.
Team boss praises Vettel: “Exemplary performance”
However, the British racing team in Formula 1 is behind its own expectations. Nevertheless, Krack does not feel any frustration with Vettel. “His demeanor and way of working are exemplary. He is at the track early, concentrates on the task at hand and goes through all the data with the engineers and technicians,” said the 50-year-old.
Vettel knows the strengths and weaknesses of the team. “It’s extremely valuable for us as a team, especially in this situation, to have him with us with all his experience. And he’s fast, gets everything out of it,” said Krack.
Aston Martin currently ranks eighth in the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship. “The gap to the two leading teams Red Bull and Ferrari is very big, so the task will be difficult this year,” admitted Krack, but added: “However, the gap in the midfield among the racing teams is very small and we are working hard to take more steps forward.”
