The 2021 Formula 1 season was dominated to the last corner by the heated title fight between record world champion Lewis Hamilton and the new champion Max Verstappen. The duo won 18 of the 21 races and shaped the last year from the very first Grand Prix. Behind the dominant teams of Mercedes and Red Bull, Scuderia Ferrari got back into position and finished third in the Constructors’ Championship.
The traditional racing team from Maranello has stabilized in its performance after its epidemic year 2020 and showed some impressive performances in the person of its two regular drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
Above all, new Ferrari driver Sainz made a powerful impression with his outstanding consistency last year – even with the competition.
Compared to “Sport1”, Red Bull Motorsport Director Dr. Helmut Marko now admits that the Spaniard’s performances had really impressed him: “Carlos is a very good racing driver,” said Marko about the driver he once brought into the Red Bull family with Toro Rosso.
Marko believes Sainz is capable of further top performances at Ferrari
The Austrian even goes so far as to believe that Carlos Sainz will be able to win a Formula 1 world title in the future: “The new regulations make it difficult to make predictions for this season. But should Ferrari make a big splash with the new car , Carlos can certainly fight for the title.”
In his debut year for the Prancing Horse racing team, Sainz was not yet able to win a Grand Prix in an improved Ferrari. After all, he piloted the red racer four times onto the podium.
As much as Marko rated the performance of the 27-year-old, he put the skills of his teammate at Ferrari, Charles Leclerc, into perspective.
“He [Carlos Sainz, Anm. d. Red.] has shown that Leclerc is probably not the wonder boy that many thought he was,” said the Red Bull consultant.
In the drivers’ standings for the 2021 season, Carlos Sainz had collected 164.5 points, leaving Charles Leclerc just behind (159 points).
