Formula 1 | Marko reveals: That’s why Spielberg is so popular with the drivers

The Silverstone spectacle is only just behind us when the next Formula 1 highlight is just around the corner. At the weekend, the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg is all about the proverbial sausage. A race that the drivers are particularly looking forward to, according to Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko.

“Here we have a unique route embedded in a valley basin – a symbiosis of architecture and layout,” enthused Marko in his column for the Austrian “Kronen newspaper” from the course in Spielberg.

The route is also “at the top of the list of popularity” among drivers, added the Red Bull consultant, who listed several advantages.

“Although logically the big city flair à la Singapore is missing, the drivers love the offer, the hospitality, which is honest and not played, and of course the schnitzel – with the exception of Hamilton, who is vegan,” joked Marko, looking at the formula 1 record world champion.

According to Marko, the appreciation of the Formula 1 event is mutual, because not only the drivers appreciate the course and everything that surrounds it. The region around Graz also benefits from the guest performance of the premier class.

“For the hotel industry in Graz and the surrounding area, it is the only event where prices can be increased significantly and a minimum duration can be stipulated. That is only possible with the Grand Prix,” wrote Marko.

“It’s going to be a huge spectacle”

The course in Styria has lost the “archaic”, Marko continues, but the “kick” is still there. The fans, who are flocking to the track in droves again this year, apparently feel the same way: “The Red Bull Ring will be bursting at the seams. It will be a huge spectacle for all motorsport fans.”

The Formula 1 program will support the spectacle, because for the second time this season a sprint race will take place in Spielberg on Saturday. Qualifying will be brought forward to Friday accordingly. Thus, the fans get the finest motorsport action on all three days.
