Formula 1: Hamilton chases Ferrari

After the rainy first practice session for the British Formula 1 Grand Prix, Friday’s second practice session at Silverstone was all the busier.

Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) secured the best time in 1:28.942 minutes in front of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes / +0.163), Lando Norris (McLaren / +0.176) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull / +0.207).

The top 4 were by no means without problems. Sainz was annoyed: “I lost a lot in the fast passages with the ‘bouncing’.”

Norris once stood in his pit seat with no rear wheels because the rear jack buckled. And Verstappen kept hearing a disturbing noise: “I don’t know what it is. Sounds like something is grazing.”

It remains to be seen how meaningful the times on Friday are. The first practice was almost completely useless because of the rain. And unlike usual, hardly any long runs could be done in the late afternoon because the teams were busy trying out their numerous updates.

That says McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl

In addition: “The cars are very susceptible to these gusts of wind, which is definitely a challenge here in Silverstone,” explains McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl in an interview with “Sky”.

About the deficit of his second driver Daniel Ricciardo (9./+0.960), he says: “It wasn’t a clean lap for Daniel. That’s why the deficit. And Lando got a very good lap.”

While the top 4 were extremely close together, the field spread a little further back. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was already 0.462 seconds behind in P5, Fernando Alonso (Alpine) was sixth, 0.753 seconds behind. They were followed by Sergio Pérez (Red Bull / +0.811) and George Russell (Mercedes / +0.857).

Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) was 12th, Mick Schumacher (Haas) 19th. Both were slower than their respective teammates.

The AlphaTauris at P16/18 was disappointing. Pierre Gasly couldn’t explain the 1.568 seconds gap: “I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t have any grip,” he radioed.
