Five other participants in the Winter Games in Beijing and thus fewer than ever since the start of recording on January 23 have been infected with the corona virus.
As the organizers announced on Wednesday, three of the positive cases were discovered the day before in people arriving at Beijing Airport. In the closed Olympic bubble, two infected people were added. The German Olympic Sports Confederation also reported a positive test among the team members who had just arrived in Beijing on Tuesday.
In total, more than 70,000 tests were carried out on Tuesday. The total number of infected has risen to 398 since January 23. The trend in newly infected people has been pointing downwards for days, which the organizers take as a sign that the extensive protective measures are working.
The number of five new infections is the lowest daily value at the Winter Games so far. At the beginning of the daily recording of corona cases on January 23, six new infections were reported, as was the case last Tuesday.
A strict Corona security concept applies to the Winter Games. Everyone involved – from athletes to journalists – is completely segregated from the rest of the Chinese population. “According to my information, there is no transmission of corona within the closed circuit,” said Huang Chun, vice director of China’s organizing committee in charge of corona pandemic prevention. The most recent cases in athletes are due to infections before entry.
