Disabled athlete Marco Maier set an exclamation mark at the Para World Cup in Östersund, Sweden.
Almost five weeks before the start of the Paralympics in Beijing (March 4 to 13), the 22-year-old won the freestyle cross-country sprint ahead of the Russians Alexander Pronkow and Ivan Kodlozerow.
For Maier it was the first podium finish of his career. “It’s crazy that we’re going straight to the front,” said the man from the Allgäu. In addition, the visually impaired Nico Messinger secured third place in the cross-country sprint. In the biathlon sprint, on the other hand, Messinger and Maier clearly missed out on top positions.
The German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) has nominated 18 athletes for the Paralympics. Half of them come from the Nordic squad.
