Bundesliga returnees FC Schalke 04 continue to work on their squad for the coming season. On Tuesday, the Royal Blues announced two more personal details on the departures side.
As the Gelsenkirchener officially confirmed, left-back Hamza Mendyl and midfielder Levent Mercan will leave the club.
Mendyl will henceforth join the Belgian first division club OH Leuven. The defender still had a valid working paper until 2023 at FC Schalke 04. After he was loaned out to the Turkish club Gaziantep FK last season, he no longer had any prospects at the traditional club from the Ruhr area.
Schalke’s sporting director Rouven Schröder was relieved on Tuesday that Hamza Mendyl’s personnel could be clarified: “We have openly communicated that we do not see Hamza’s future at Schalke. That is why the change is the best for all sides from a sporting and economic point of view Solution. We wish Hamza all the best for his future, “said the busy S04 manager about the defensive man.
It never really worked for Hamza Mendyl in the FC Schalke 04 jersey. Signed by the French elite club OSC Lille in the summer of 2018, he only played 21 competitive games for S04 and was never undisputed on the left side of defence.
During his time with the Knappen, he was loaned one more time to Gaziantep FK, namely to Dijon FCO in the 2019/2020 season.
FC Schalke 04 did not provide any further information on the further transfer modalities with the 24-year-old and his new employer from the Jupiler Pro League, but he is said to have signed in Leuven until 2025.
Mercan is making a permanent move to Turkey
Levent Mercan, meanwhile, will continue his career in Turkey with top-flight club Fatih Karagümrük SK. The 21-year-old was loaned to the club last season and will now move to the Bosphorus on a permanent basis. The miners did not comment on the transfer fee.
“Levo is a young player who took his chance in the SüperLig last season. Having Fatih Karagümrük SK sign him is the best option for all sides, as it would have been difficult for him to do the same at FC Schalke 04 to get a lot of game parts,” explained Schröder.
