FC Schalke: Becker complains about “negative spiral”

Defender Timo Becker, who fled to Hansa Rostock, looked back on his difficult last few months at FC Schalke 04.

Under head coach Dimitrios Grammozis, Timo Becker has hardly been considered at FC Schalke 04 in the current season, although he had actually gotten stuck in the squad in the previous relegation season – a bitter career break for the 24-year-old.

“It is mentally very difficult to play little over a long period of time and hardly get any chances,” Becker confessed to the “WAZ“.

He got more and more “into a negative spiral”, in his still young career this was “not the first time. In the past, things didn’t always go smoothly for me, and I learned from these phases,” said Becker. He still tried to give “100 percent in every training session” at Schalke.

Timo Becker at FC Schalke 04 “not present from the head”

A major setback for Becker was finally being transferred to the second team, with whom he suddenly had to play in the Regionalliga West in the first half of the season.

“When I was sent to the U23s, I wasn’t mentally present in the first two games. The whole situation was too much for me,” said Becker.

Many opponents would show extra motivation against Bundesliga professionals and sometimes work too hard. “And I have to admit: after the difficult months in the 2nd division, I wasn’t mentally strong enough for that,” said Becker.

Will Timo Becker not return to FC Schalke 04?

Actually, the native of Herten saw himself as an integral part of a Schalke team that could manage direct promotion back to the Bundesliga, especially since his contract was extended until 2023.

“I was guided by these feelings and thought that I could be a regular player in the 2nd Bundesliga. I really wanted to help Schalke to get promoted,” said Becker.

The fact that his chances were becoming less and less “hit him and mentally pulled him down”, such a situation is extremely “difficult for the head”.

Now the defender wants to acquire the necessary match practice on loan at Hansa Rostock. Whether he will return to Gelsenkirchen at the end of the season is not foreseeable at the moment.

“Sure, I can imagine returning to Schalke, but the main thing now is to achieve our common goals in Rostock. We’ll see where I end up in the summer,” said Becker.
