FC Schalke 04 sign new right-back

FC Schalke 04 is continuing to plan the squad for the upcoming season. As the Bundesliga soccer team announced on Thursday morning, right-back Cedric Brunner is joining the club.

The 28-year-old played for Arminia Bielefeld last season. Since his contract with Ostwestfalen expired at the end of June, FC Schalke 04 does not have to pay a fee. Brunner is tied to the Royal Blues until the end of the 2023/24 season.

“Cedric expands our options defensively and offensively on the right side,” S04 sporting director Rouven Schröder commented on the transfer: “He’s a highly reliable partner against the ball, greedy in one-on-one duels and overall a very reliable defender . And on offense he can cause danger with his good pace.”

Head coach Frank Kramer added: “Cedric has proven his quality in the past two years in the Bundesliga and before that also in the second division as an important support for promotion. We will need exactly this stability to survive against really good opponents. He has it at all his stations, always managed to work his way up to the required, highest level and we expect the same from him here.”

Brunner is eager for the challenge at FC Schalke

Brunner himself was happy that “the change could be made before the training camp”. “There we lay the foundation for staying in the league. Every day we will work hard as a team and I am happy to be part of this mission from today,” said the Swiss.

The defender switched from FC Zurich to Arminia Bielefeld in 2018. In the past season, Brunner completed 28 competitive games for the Bundesliga relegated team. The S04 newcomer ran a total of 111 times for the DSC.

At Schalke, Brunner has to fight with Mehmet Aydin for the right-back position.
