FC Schalke 04 bags next winter transfer

Second division soccer team FC Schalke 04 has wrapped up another winter transfer.

After Marius Lode and Andreas Vindheim, S04 presented the South Korean Dong-gyeong Lee as the third newcomer shortly before the end of the transfer period. The district club confirmed this on Monday after the obligatory medical check-up was completed.

The 24-year-old is initially on loan from Ulsan Hyundai for the remainder of the season, with Schalke 04 having an option to buy. The club did not provide any information about the amount.

“We’ve had Dong-gyeong Lee on our radar for some time. Our chief scout André Hechelmann traveled to South Korea to watch him live. We are convinced of his development potential,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. With his “excellent” technique, Lee should now further advance Schalke’s offensive game.

FC Schalke previously brought Norway duo

Schalke representatives last took a closer look at the eleven-time national player at the international match against Iceland in mid-January, according to a report by “football-asian”. South Korea won the friendly, which took place in Belek, Turkey, 5-1, with Lee pulling the strings in midfield. In the forthcoming World Cup qualifier against Syria on Tuesday in Dubai, the left foot will again be part of the game, as announced by Schalke.

Lee switched to Ulsan Hyundai in 2018, his contract actually runs until the end of 2023. In the 2021 season, the 1.75 meter left foot scored seven goals in 31 competitive games.

With the third winter transfer, FC Schalke should underpin the goal of making direct promotion back to the Bundesliga. S04 had previously signed the Norwegians Marius Lode and Andreas Vindheim, who played in a Schalke jersey for the first time last matchday in the 5-0 win at Erzgebirge Aue.
