FC Schalke 04 and BVB criticize Corona decisions

Like BVB before it, FC Schalke 04 has criticized the latest corona decisions by politicians and advocated a quick return of more fans to professional sport.

“We expect professional sport in Germany to open up by February 9th at the latest. The decision taken at short notice by the Bavarian cabinet shows that a balance between fighting the pandemic together and social participation in culture and sport is possible,” said the new CEO of the second division soccer team , Bernd Schröder, with reference to the decision made in Bavaria on Tuesday to allow 10,000 spectators again until further notice.

Schröder hopes for a similar development in other federal states such as North Rhine-Westphalia, where only 750 fans are currently allowed, and expressed solidarity with regional rivals BVB: “As Schalke 04, we share the position expressed by Hans-Joachim Watzke. Professional sport has in common with its many thousands of fans proved that major events can be held safely with well-developed and tried-and-tested hygiene concepts.”

BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke had reacted the day before with clear words to the waiver by the federal and state governments to open the football stadiums to more spectators and even considered legal steps: “We will take a close look at the decisions of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and examine them whether we can have them checked in an urgent procedure.”

During their consultations with the federal government, the prime ministers of the federal states decided on Monday not to allow more spectators to return to Bundesliga games and other German professional leagues for the time being due to the increasing number of corona infections. However, a uniform regulation for major national events is to be agreed by February 9th.
