FC Bayern: Will Lewandowski defend his world footballer title?

On Saturday, Robert Lewandowski again gave his business card as the top scorer in the Bundesliga. The Polish international scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 win in Cologne, making him the second player after Gerd Müller (365 goals) to reach the 300-goal mark in the German football league.

On Monday (7:00 p.m. / Sky), the 33-year-old hopes to be named world footballer again by the world association FIFA, like last year. The Bayern star competes in the final with world star Lionel Messi from Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool’s exceptional Egyptian player Mohamed Salah for the award “The Best”.

“Robert has a very, very big chance of winning. What he has achieved is absolutely outstanding,” said Rio World Champion Sami Khedira recently. To his own disappointment, Lewandowski had to let Messi go first when the Ballon d’Or was awarded by “France Football” last November. The 34-year-old Argentinian has been a world footballer six times.

In the FIFA elections last year, Lewandowski prevailed over Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. As in the past, an international jury will select the winner. The coaches of all national teams, their captains, one journalist from each country and the fans are entitled to vote. Before Lewandowski, the prize went to Messi (2019), Ronaldo (2016 and 2017) and Luka Modric (2018).

The basis for the award are the “individual achievements” from October 8, 2020 to August 7, 2021 – “regardless of titles”. During this period, Lewandowski surpassed the “eternal” Bundesliga season record of the legendary “Bomber” Gerd Müller from the 1971/72 season with 41 goals. In the 2021 calendar year, too, he was one hit better than Müller 49 years earlier – however, this record is not fully included in the rating.

Manuel Neuer can also hope

For women, the two Spaniards Jennifer Hermoso and Alexia Putellas from Champions League winner FC Barcelona and Australia’s Sam Kerr (Chelsea FC) are in the final selection. Last year, England international Lucy Bronze had cleared the trophy.

In addition to Lewandowski, some Germans are also hoping for the highest FIFA consecration. Bayern captain Manuel Neuer has been nominated for the title of world goalkeeper, national player Ann-Katrin Berger can hope for the award as best goalkeeper. Thomas Tuchel from Champions League winner Chelsea could become world coach.
