Ex-biathlon Olympic champion Ullrich demands more money for top athletes

The chairman of the Sports Committee in the German Bundestag, Frank Ullrich, has spoken out in favor of better financial support for top athletes.

“An athlete should be honored like a nurse or anyone who does something for society,” said the 1980 biathlon Olympic champion in an interview with the news magazine “Der Spiegel”.

The bonus for Olympic champions should be increased, winners should be rewarded with pension points, the 64-year-old SPD politician demanded. He wants to campaign for more posts for top athletes in the Bundeswehr, customs and the federal police.
