For the former national coach Silvia Neid, the German women’s national soccer team is ready for the title at the European Championships in England (July 6th to 31st).
“I have a lot of confidence in our team,” said the 58-year-old in an interview with “Deutsche Sporthilfe”. “For me, she’s one of the top favorites for the European title.”
The squad is “balanced”, added Neid, “many are two-footed, many have incredible speed and playfulness, we have a good mix of experience and youthful carefreeness”. “It’s about time we knocked on the door again and at least made it to the semi-finals or the final again.”
That was the rule under her direction. Neid was involved in eight European Championship titles alone as a player, assistant coach or national coach. In addition, there was the 2007 World Cup title and Olympic gold in 2016. The national team was “in a way always my ‘baby’,” she said, “that’s why it’s difficult for me to work as a coach elsewhere”.
Since 2017, Neid has headed the scouting department for women and girls at the DFB. She was awarded the Golden Sports Pyramid for her life’s work and thus also inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports.
