EM | This is how the German stars continue after the Corona chaos

The German national handball team sinks into corona chaos at the European Championships in Hungary and Slovakia. Before the final preliminary round group game against Poland on Tuesday evening (from 6 p.m.), the number of infected DHB stars has increased to seven. How is it going for the German team now?

It has been known since Monday evening that the German selection now lacks a complete handball team with a positive corona test: In addition to the backcourt giant Julius Kuehn, who has been out with Corona since Saturday, his substitute has also gone in the last few days Henrik Wagner on Sunday and the quintet Kai Häfner, Timo Kastening, Lukas Mertens, and Luca Witzke and Andrew Wolff in quarantine after they also tested positive for a PCR test on Monday.

It is certain that the EM does not have to be over for the seven players. The regulations of the EHF are clear here: From the fifth day after the infection has been detected, an affected player can submit a first negative PCR test. If the second negative PCR test follows 24 hours later, the actor can rejoin his team.

In relation to the German squad, this would mean, at best, that regular player Julius Kühn could be back in the squad of national coach Alfred Gislason in the second main round game, which is scheduled for January 21st.

Provided that the half-left no longer has any symptoms and, in addition to the two negative PCR tests, can also present a medical certificate that shows the ability to participate in competitive sports.

Handball EM: Last preliminary round game against Poland important for sport

All other six infected DHB stars who are currently in self-isolation could then be back a game later for the penultimate main round game next Sunday (January 23) if they meet the criteria listed.

Whether the nominated “temporary national players” around Johannes Bitter, Rune Dahmke, Fabian Wiede, Paul Drux and Sebastian Firnhaber the team then have to leave again, the coming week will show and depends on the course of the illness of the individual players. So far, at least no case is known in the German team in which an actor complains of severe symptoms.

From a sporting point of view, the situation is already dramatic enough for the DHB team. Even if progress is already certain before Tuesday evening against Poland, the game against the team, which is also still without a loss, is of great importance for the further course of the tournament.

The winner of this duel takes the two points into the main round – a possibly decisive advantage in the fight for the semi-final tickets, which will be played in three other main round games.

Opponents in the main round in the coming days will include the heavyweights Spain, Sweden and Norway, against whom the German selection was only treated as an outsider even before the Corona shock.
