The Icelandic national handball team kept its chances in the semi-finals at the European Championship – but has to hope for support from world champion Denmark in the duel with Olympic champion France.
In their last game in main round group I in Budapest, the Icelanders defeated Montenegro 34:24 (17:8) and moved 6:4 points past the French to second place because they won a direct comparison. Omar Ingi Magnusson from SC Magdeburg was the most successful scorer of the game with eleven goals.
Record world champions France (6:2) need a draw in the evening (8:30 p.m.) against the Danes, who have already qualified for the semi-finals, to progress. France suffered the heaviest defeat in their European Championship history against Iceland on Saturday with a loss of 21:29.
From the main round group 2, defending champions Spain and Sweden have been determined as semi-finalists. The German team finished the group in fourth place.
