The still tense Corona situation also influences the preparation of the German handball players for the first EM main round game against defending champion Spain.
National coach Alfred Gislason didn’t know on Wednesday morning whether he would be able to train with the team again before the game on Thursday (6:00 p.m. / ARD) in Bratislava.
“It is not yet clear whether we will risk training,” said the 62-year-old Icelander at the team hotel in the Slovakian capital. “We will do a quick test before training. The organizers then plan to do a PCR test after training.”
In the past few days, nine national players had tested positive for Corona. Gislason still has no explanation for this. “From my point of view, we’ve been careful all year. That’s why it’s a mystery to me how it got in here,” he said.
The coach had already reacted to the failures with several additional nominations. Goalkeeper Daniel Rebmann (Frisch Auf Göppingen) and winger Patrick Zieker (TVB Stuttgart) joined the team on Wednesday morning. Gislason currently has 16 players available for the game against Spain.
