Ice hockey superstar Leon Draisaitl keeps his fingers crossed for the German national team at the Olympic Games and believes they can achieve a similar success as four years ago.
“I have a very good feeling,” said the Edmonton Oilers NHL striker in the Sportschau Olympia podcast, “I think the Germans will play a very good tournament.”
The selection of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB), which sensationally won silver in Pyeongchang in 2018, has “the opportunity to beat any team”. Because the professionals from the NHL are not there, the tournament is “very balanced”.
Draisaitl said that he “would really like to” be in Beijing now, “of course it hurts to experience it from afar”. The NHL had not approved its players for the Olympics four years ago. “I hope that in four years, when I’m 30, it will work and we can finally witness this special event,” he said.
The DEB selection starts the tournament against Canada on Thursday (2:10 p.m. CET/ZDF and Eurosport).
