The luge doubles Toni Eggert/Sascha Benecken set the next exclamation mark three weeks before the Olympic Winter Games. One week after their success in Sigulda, Latvia, the world champions from Thuringia also won the penultimate World Cup in Oberhof. The Olympic champions Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt made the German double triumph perfect.
Already in the first run Eggert/Benecken set the course with a track record (41.331 seconds) and improved it again in the second run to 41.320 seconds. “Toni and Sascha are in a class of their own, they showed that again today with two track records,” said national coach Norbert Loch.
For Eggert/Benecken it was the third win of the season in the classic World Cup, the first came at the start in the Yanqing Sliding Center – there the Winter Games in Beijing (February 4th to 20th) next month will be about Olympic gold. In the overall World Cup standings, the two German duos remain the first pursuers of the Latvian brothers Andris and Juris Sics, who missed the podium on Saturday in fifth place.
Before the Olympic Games, there is one last World Cup stop on the racing calendar: the Beijing dress rehearsal will take place in St. Moritz next weekend (January 22nd/23rd).
