“Deportation character”: Snowboarder criticizes harshly

Snowboarder Alexander Payer has sharply criticized the way Chinese officials deal with his girlfriend, who tested positive for Corona.

“It almost had the character of a deportation,” said the Austrian about the transport of Sabine Schöffmann to an Olympic quarantine hotel: “I think it’s a shame that the IOC tolerated it.”

Co-favorite Schöffmann (29) missed her Olympic debut in the parallel giant slalom on Tuesday due to her positive test. In his Instagram story, partner Payer posted a video showing five people in white full-body protective suits picking up Schöffmann from the hotel in Zhangjiakou. “These are pictures you don’t get to see on TV,” he wrote.

Schöffmann himself announced that she was fine in the quarantine hotel. In 2014 she narrowly missed qualifying for the Winter Games, and in 2018 injuries prevented her from participating.

The German combined athlete Eric Frenzel, who also tested positive, was allowed to move to a larger room after sharp criticism from the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) of his quarantine conditions.
