Date for meeting between Bach and Peng Shuai still open

A date for the meeting between IOC President Thomas Bach and tennis player Peng Shuai at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing has not yet been specifically agreed.

“This meeting will take place during the games,” said a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee at the request of the “German Press Agency”.

The Chinese Olympic Committee has supported the IOC in organizing the various talks and will also ensure that the meeting can take place under very strict corona measures and in the Olympic bubble during the games.

IOC has kept in touch with Peng Shuai

Peng Shuai, the former world number one in doubles, published allegations of sexual assault by a top Chinese politician on the social network Weibo in early November. The entry was deleted soon after.

The state censorship had also blocked any debate on the Chinese Internet about it. There is no independent information about the well-being of the tennis player, many athletes had expressed concern. The German IOC President Thomas Bach spoke to her on video.

The IOC has stayed in touch with her since the first phone call with Peng Shuai on November 21, 2021 and has had a number of talks with her – “the last one just last week,” it said. “That way we got to know each other better.”

For example, she told the IOC that she was looking forward to the Winter Games and would follow the competitions and her Chinese competitors closely.
