BVB receives a bitter home clap against Bayern Leverkusen

First a slapstick own goal, then a terrible humiliation – Borussia Dortmund served Bayern the championship trophy on a silver platter. BVB lost against a spectacularly fast Bayer Leverkusen in the top Bundesliga game by a devastating 2:5 (1:3) and is now nine points behind the Munich leader.

The title dream has almost burst – as before in the Champions League and in the DFB Cup. After an own goal by Manuel Akanji (10th), which was the fault of fellow defender Dan-Axel Zagadou, Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong (16th) also helped out with an own goal on Sunday.

After that, however, Bayer mercilessly overran the particularly slow BVB defensively in front of 10,000 fans: The extremely strong Florian Wirtz (20′), Robert Andrich (28′) with a direct free kick, Jonathan Tah (53′) and Moussa Diaby (87′) scored to a more than deserved victory, even at this altitude. The chemistry is right at Bayer at the moment: Leverkusen moved up to five points from Dortmund in third place. Steffen Tigges (89th) scored for Dortmund shortly before the end.

BVB main actor Erling Haaland was painfully missing – as were Mats Hummels and Emre Can in supporting roles. Coach Marco Rose took a relaxed seat in the director’s chair. “The film hasn’t been shot yet, we can help determine the script,” he said – and certainly didn’t want a horror film like the first hour.

Leverkusen were brutally offensive. After the 3: 4 in the first leg after a 3: 2 lead, the entire team still has a score to settle, Wirtz reported. So everything was set up for a spectacle of two teams playing ambush football after the opponent lost possession. And that’s how it started: But differently than expected.

BVB plays too timidly and prone to errors

Zagadou, Hummels’ representative, played the ball in his own penalty area into the foot of Bayer striker Patrik Schick, in which Dortmund is said to be interested. Schick failed because of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Akanji, who rushed to the rescue, got the ball – goal. At the other end, Frimpong accidentally headed a corner kick into his own goal. Lennart Grill, replacement for the corona infected Lukas Hradecky, was powerless.

However, it was also possible without the help of the opponent. Leverkusen played a dream counterattack at lightning speed over several stations, Wirtz pushed in with one contact. Andrich’s free-kick goal from the right half also fell into the dream category. Rose’s hopes of calm in the game were gone after 30 minutes, the defense hopelessly overwhelmed with the fast Bayer wingers Diaby and Karim Bellarabi. Kobel saved against Mitchel Bakker (43rd).

Dortmund came out of the dressing room with a slightly better attitude and pressed, but was always in danger of the Bayer Express rushing off. Zagadou’s perfect tackle prevented the 1:4 (52nd) – which fell seconds later. Tah volleyed the ball into the goal. Dortmund’s efforts to connect remained timid for a long time after that.
