France’s star striker Karim Benzema has caused protest online with a video about his vacation in Miami because he filmed himself doing particularly climate-damaging activities.
In the short clip posted on Twitter, the newly crowned Champions League winner from Spanish soccer champions Real Madrid shows himself driving in a sports car, on a jet ski tour and posing in front of a private jet.
“There will be no football on a dead planet,” responded one user. “Please offer your fans a different world of imagination. Otherwise, the younger ones risk having to live in hell.”
Another did not spare criticism either: “Dude, when we run out of water and food, I hope that someone will come and say to you with a hand on your shoulder: “Well played, you could have acted in the right direction, but you preferred to give young people unattainable dreams deadly to life on earth, well done.”
As the broadcaster “France Info” reported, the founder of the ecological blog Bon Pote, Thomas Wagner, also objected. “This clip is a best of what you shouldn’t do anymore.” The return flight by private jet alone leads to higher CO2 emissions than is responsible for one person in a year.
