After the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the international community has already imposed tough and far-reaching sanctions against the aggressor Russia. Some of these are also having an impact on the world of sports, such as Russia’s exclusion from the Swift international payments system. For Bundesliga club Hertha BSC, however, this could mean a loss of millions.
Last summer, center forward Jhon Córdoba left Berlin for Russia for a sum of millions. For more than ten million euros, the 28-year-old joined the Russian first division club FK Krasnodar. In addition to further bonus payments, the entire transfer package could increase to almost 15 million euros.
A huge sum that Hertha BSC will probably never reach. Because the financial embargo against Putin’s Russia also means that the Berliners are currently unable to conduct any financial transactions with the Russian club from the Premier League.
It has already been confirmed that the majority of the base fee was not paid all at once last summer, but should be paid in three installments. The Berliners have only received one payment so far.
Hertha’s finance boss speaks out
CFO Ingo Schiller has already discussed the matter with “image“, but put the situation into perspective in one breath in view of the conditions in the Ukrainian war zone: “At the moment it’s about much more important things than the outstanding balance of this transfer, namely about the people in Ukraine and an end to this war as quickly as possible. For everything else we will surely find a solution in due course.”
The money was firmly planned at Hertha to fill the financial gaps caused by the corona pandemic. How the cause will develop further is still open according to the current status.
Jhon Córdoba was only under contract with Hertha BSC in 2021/2021 and scored seven goals in 21 Bundesliga games.
