In the last year Manuel Akanji has developed into the most stable defender at Borussia Dortmund in an otherwise rather shaky defense. After the signing of Niklas Süle from FC Bayern, however, the air for the Swiss is getting thinner. Appropriately, the 26-year-old is said to have recently turned down an offer from BVB to extend the contract. The black and yellow would probably let the defensive player go.
In mid-January, Manuel Akanji celebrated his four-year anniversary at BVB. In the spring of 2018, the Swiss had moved from FC Basel to Westphalia with huge advance praise, and Dortmund cost the defender around 21 million euros at the time.
The defensive player, who rarely plays spectacularly but is usually reliable, has since gained a good reputation in Dortmund. So it’s hardly surprising that those responsible for BVB would like to – or wanted to – extend with Akanji, whose working paper expires in 2023. Because after the spectacular transfer of Niklas Süle, the situation has changed.
Shortly before the deal became known, journalist Manuel Veth, who writes for Forbes magazine, among other things, reported problems in the talks between Akanji and BVB. Accordingly, the Swiss national player rejected the first offer from the black and yellow.
Will BVB collect 30 million euros for Akanji?
According to “Sport Bild”, Akanji was offered a new three-year contract that would last until 2026. The central defender could have pocketed around seven million euros a year – apparently not enough for the experienced right-footer.
Since, according to media reports, BVB is still planning with veteran Mats Hummels and Dan-Axel Zagadou, who is also to be extended, Akanji could face a crash in the internal team hierarchy. With Süle, a suitable successor would already be on board.
According to “WAZ“Wouldn’t put any obstacles in the way of BVB Akanji.” The newspaper brings a possible transfer fee of around 30 million euros into play.
However: There are no concrete rumors about interested clubs at Akanji so far. There is still a lot that can be done in this regard before the summer.
