Because of Corona cases: Players’ association calls for a DEL stop

In view of the corona outbreak at the Adler Mannheim and a number of other cases in the German Ice Hockey League, the SVE players’ association is calling for the league to be stopped shortly before the Winter Olympics.

“With a view to the international tournament in which our national team for ice hockey Germany is participating in the spirit of the Olympics, as well as the planned catch-up games in the DEL, it is important to reduce any risks to a minimum in the coming days and to isolate players as best as possible to optimize”, wrote the SVE, while the German Ice Hockey Federation published the squad for the Winter Games in Beijing.

DEB sports director Christian Künast reacted with approval: “My private opinion is: if they stop, that would certainly help us.”

Several teams in the DEL are currently in quarantine. A number of games are canceled and have to be made up for; among other things during the originally planned Olympic break in February. On Monday, the Adler from Mannheim made another corona outbreak public with 14 positive cases.

According to information from “Mannheimer Morgen”, players who are in the German Olympic squad are also affected. “We won’t comment on names,” said Künast, but admitted: “It’s possible that only 22 will fly to China and three will follow.” The German team starts on February 2nd.

According to “dpa” information, a short-term suspension of the DEL games until next weekend to protect the Olympic drivers is unrealistic. The ongoing game operations were also coordinated with the DEB.
