From Rafael van der Vaart’s point of view, Matthijs de Ligt would be a “perfect” fit for Bayern Munich. The former Bundesliga star even indirectly took a small dig at BVB in his assessment of the central defender’s strengths.
“It’s a great idea from Bayern and Salihamidzic has to be praised here. I would be happy for Matthijs, it would be the right step for him,” said the former Bundesliga professional (39) on “Sport1” about a possible transfer of his Dutch compatriot.
According to media reports, the Dutch soccer player de Ligt (22) has already deposited his desire to move to Munich at Juventus Turin. The clubs and de Ligt themselves have not yet made any public statements. He is said to have a €120m release clause.
Van der Vaart is full of praise for his compatriot, who, like him, once played for Ajax Amsterdam. “He’s an excellent player, he’s still so young and a top defender who’s good with the ball. He can play one-on-one against almost any striker.” In addition, the Juventus star is “quick and playful. And he’s a good guy on a human level.”
Van der Vaart with an indirect dig at BVB
For van der Vaart, after Sadio Mané’s transfer from Liverpool, de Ligt’s commitment would be “simply ideal”: “Bayern always do it very cleverly, they don’t make exaggerated transfers, they think about it wisely. With Mané and de Ligt that would be a really impressive announcement to the Bundesliga and to Europe.”
Bringing in De Ligt would be a transfer for the future. In addition, he would seamlessly compensate for the departure of national player Niklas Süle, who switched to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer: “If you were to get de Ligt now and compare both, Bayern would get absolute quality.”
De Ligt is “significantly better than Süle”, so van der Vaart indirectly took a dig at BVB.
