With debutante Selina Cerci and the two returnees Sara Doorsoun and Nicole Anyomi, the German soccer players are starting the European Championship year in the strong fielded “Arnold Clark Cup” in England. National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg called up the 21-year-old attacker Cerci from Turbine Potsdam for the first time in her 25-player squad for the four-nation tournament. Doorsoun and Anyomi (both Eintracht Frankfurt) are returning after injuries.
In England, the selection of the German Football Association (DFB) meets Spain, Olympic champions Canada and the hosts between February 17th and 23rd.
“This tournament is a real determination of where we stand. Without exception, we will meet world-class opponents who will challenge us in all areas,” said Voss-Tecklenburg It will be an exciting start to our EM year in every respect.”
Personnel problems with the DFB-Elf
At the tournament on the island, however, Voss-Tecklenburg has to do without a number of players. Captain Alexandra Popp, Pia Wolter (both VfL Wolfsburg), Marina Hegering, Laura Benkarth, Sydney Lohmann (all Bayern Munich), Dzsenifer Marozsan (Olympique Lyon), Melanie Leupolz (FC Chelsea) and Paulina Krumbiegel (TSG Hoffenheim) are missing.
Cerci should seize their chance. The striker is currently the top scorer in the Bundesliga with eleven goals. “She’s in good shape and plays at a consistently high level,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. “Now the time has come when we want to see her with us.”
The team meets on Monday in Frankfurt/Main. The team then travels to England on Tuesday. Matches will be played in Middlesbrough, Norwich and Wolverhampton. The European Championship finals are also scheduled in England from July 6th to 31st.
