With AlphaTauri and Alpine, two other Formula 1 teams announced the presentation dates for their 2022 cars this Wednesday. AlphaTauri started things off by announcing on social media that it would unveil the AT03 on February 14 at 12 p.m. Central European Time.
Just a few hours after this announcement, midfield competitor Alpine, with whom AlphaTauri dueled for fifth place in the constructors’ championship in 2021, also announced on social media that it would be showing its new car on February 21.
In a short video released by Alpine, the team also confirmed that its new challenger will be called the A522, in reference to last year’s A521.
In its first year under the new name, Alpine’s 2021 Formula One season was characterized by shaky results, although Esteban Ocon and the returned Fernando Alonso picked up enough points to beat AlphaTauri by 13 points in the battle for fifth place in the Championship .
Last season also saw a first win for Ocon at the Hungarian Grand Prix. It was the first win for the Enstone-based team since the 2013 Australian Grand Prix, which saw Kimi Raikkonen triumph for Lotus-Renault.
After sixth place in the 2021 Constructors’ Championship, AlphaTauri is hoping that the unchanged line-up of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda will help improve the results. While Gasly had his best season ever last year, Tsunoda had a mixed year as a rookie.
AlphaTauri’s previous engine supplier, Honda, withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of 2021. However, the team from Faenza will continue to use the same engines – as will Red Bull, which now has its own engine department.
With AlphaTauri and Alpine, the fifth and sixth teams have now announced the presentation date for 2022. McLaren, Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari had previously announced when they would present their new cars. The first test will take place in Barcelona from February 23.
