Alonso becomes Vettel’s successor at Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso is switching from Alpine to Aston Martin for the 2023 Formula 1 season. The two-time Formula 1 world champion succeeds Sebastian Vettel, who announced his retirement at the end of the season ahead of the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Alonso has signed a multi-year contract with Aston Martin. The exact term is not known.

“I still have the hunger and the aspiration to fight and be at the front,” said Alonso. “I want to be part of a team dedicated to learning, developing and succeeding.”

He knows that there is still a lot of work to be done before Aston Martin can advance to the top. But he sees “a possibility that feels right to me”.

Why Aston Martin wanted Alonso

Aston Martin boss Lawrence Stroll says Alonso is the right driver for his team. He says: “I’ve known and admired him for many years. I always knew he was a determined winner, just like me.”

“I’m on a mission to gather the best people, provide the right resources and the right organization to succeed in this highly competitive sport. Those plans are beginning to take shape at Silverstone,” said Stroll.

It was a “natural step” to “invite” Alonso to a change, says Stroll. The ex-champion is said to help “form Aston Martin into a winning team”.

Stroll: “In our most recent discussions, we found out very quickly that we have the same goals and values. It was only logical and easy to bundle our wishes and work together.”

Lance Stroll also set for 2023

Incidentally, Lance Stroll will also remain as a driver in the racing team. Team boss Mike Krack confirmed this with the following words: “We are delighted to have Fernando and Lance in our driver line-up next year.” Krack calls it a “combination of experience and youth” that he says will be “incredibly strong.”
