2nd Bundesliga | HSV wins thanks to the Glatzel show in Darmstadt

Robert Glatzel’s record hat-trick turned the promotion race of the 2nd Bundesliga into a mass event. Hamburger SV’s 5-0 (3-0) on matchday 21 at leaders Darmstadt 98 separated the first team from sixth place (1. FC Heidenheim) by only two points – HSV is also only two points behind Darmstadt.

Hamburg striker Glatzel scored with a penalty kick (5th), with a head (10th) and with a foot (13th). The 1,000 spectators allowed at the Böllenfalltor experienced a second division record. Like Nils Petersen (SC Freiburg) and Hans Haunstein (1860 Munich), the 28-year-old Glatzel was successful three times in a row from the start to the 13th minute. In addition, Manuel Wintzheimer (76th) and shortly before the end again Glatzel (88th) met for HSV.

There were 7:45 minutes between the first and third Glatzel goal, which, however, was not a record. The record for the fastest hat trick in the second division is held by Helmut Hampl (Hessen Kassel/1983) and Werner Lenz (Union Solingen/1979). Both scored three times in four minutes.

Although Glatzel needed longer, he brought HSV quickly onto the road to victory. The guests dominated the first round and could have led even higher at the break.

In the second half, Darmstadt braced themselves against the impending defeat, but despite good chances it wasn’t enough. Instead, Wintzheimer increased.
