1. FC Köln brings defending talent from FC Bayern

Shortly before the end of the change period in the Bundesliga, 1. FC Köln strengthened their defense. The Rhinelanders secure the services of Bright Arrey-Mbi from FC Bayern, as the club announced.

Central defender Bright Arrey-Mbi slips on the jersey of 1. FC Köln on a loan basis for a year and a half. The Bundesliga club did not provide any information about a possible purchase option. Rather, the future of the junior national player should be with the German record champions in the long term: FC Bayern also extended the working paper with Arrey-Mbi until 2025.

“Bright is a young, highly talented and physically strong player with a good football education. We signed him because we trust him to ensure further competition in the central defender position and to help us immediately,” commented Cologne’s licensed player manager Thomas Kessler Transfer.

For new signing Bright Arrey-Mbi, however, the move to Cologne represents the chance to play at the highest level, as the 18-year-old played mostly in the regional team at FC Bayern. “I’m looking forward to my new challenge in Cologne. The people in charge showed me a path that I believe in and that feels right to me. That’s why I really wanted to do it. I want to take the opportunity at FC to develop myself under Steffen Baumgart to develop further and to establish itself in the professional field during this time.”

Salihamidzic comments on Arrey-Mbi’s contract extension

The defender, who was born in Kaarst, was once trained in the youth departments of several Premier League clubs before moving to FC Bayern U19s in 2019. Arrey-Mbi made his professional debut in the 2020/21 season when he started a 1-1 draw at Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. Since then, however, he has only commuted between the U19 and the U23 team in Munich, which plays in the Bavarian regional league.

Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic explained that the future of the defensive talent should lie in Munich: “Bright Arrey-Mbi is a young player with great potential. We are therefore pleased that we were able to extend his contract early until 2025. He should now gain match practice in the Bundesliga with 1. FC Köln and develop to the next level.”
